Yoga for Growing a Conscious Generation
Rainbow Pammy talks about the benefits of yoga for kids and teens, gives us some insight into her classes and generally splashes bright colours all over your screen for 3mins and 15 secs.
The Rainbow Yogis ethos is one of mindfulness and empowerment that we teach through Patanjali’s 8 limbs Yoga and core philosophies like compassion, respect, balance focus, inner growth, awareness understanding and self-love.
The word YOGA means UNION and it is important that we start to recognise ourselves not just as a sum of parts, an arm or a leg, a body or mind but as one holistic being. A beautiful, living magic spark on the Earth. A miracle!
A regular yoga practice for kids and teens teaches mindfulness during the important formative years. As our young ones are finding their way in the world, physically, mentally and socially, Yoga can give them the perspective they need to see things clearly and avoid unnecessary stress.
For younger children, yoga is excellent for balancing the energy. Whether it’s helping to manage those crazy bursts or bringing them out of their shells, it’s healthy and non-competitive so everyone benefits and everyone can feel proud of their achievements.
For teens it gives them the mental break they need to relax from busy high school schedules as they push themselves harder with late nights and study, yoga will also help boost core strength, balance, muscle groups and aid flexibility great for increasing potential and reducing the chance of injury in high school sports.
In a Rainbow Yogis class we explore “the self” and get creative with telling our own Yoga stories and writing our own adventure sequences. We also practice a sun dance, “Surya Namaskar” and have designed classes around the Mandala, where we explore the traditional ideals and meaning then create our own Mandalas out of nature and recycled materials.
The Rainbow Yogis mandala yoga dance is where we connect together as a circle with our hearts and our prana. The Mandala Yoga sequence is a beautiful way to get the kids to move together with their breath to create the spectacular partner or group yoga dance to music. We like to perform our sequences to family and friends on the last day of term, something for all yogis to work towards and to feel proud of.
We finish our classes with a positive, uplifting and empowering visualization in “Shavasina”. Either with art, candle meditations, bubbles, music and affirmations.
